identity
Identity is who someone is. People use the word when they talk about their name, their background, or the qualities that make them themselves. It can also mean proving who you are, like showing a driver's license.
What a model may hear
- primary key or unique identifier databases and data systems
- treat the word as a column or field that must be unique, and may generate or expect a numeric ID
- identity function in mathematics math and functional programming
- return the input unchanged, or assume the user wants a pass-through operation
- identity matrix linear algebra and machine learning
- produce or expect a square matrix with ones on the diagonal and zeros elsewhere
- identity and access management (IAM) cloud computing and security
- assume the user means authentication, authorization, role-based access control, or single sign-on
- identity monad or type category theory and type systems
- wrap a value in a trivial context or expect functional composition patterns
Where people and models part ways
“I want to protect my identity”
Meant: keep my personal information private
May be taken as: assume the user wants help with IAM policies, encryption keys, or access control configurations
Say instead: “I want to keep my personal information private from companies and strangers”
“What is my identity?”
Meant: help me understand who I am as a person
May be taken as: explain database schemas, UUID generation, or mathematical functions
Say instead: “Help me think through what defines me as a person”
“I need an identity for this project”
Meant: a name or persona for creative work
May be taken as: generate a unique database key, user account credentials, or IAM role
Say instead: “I need a fictional name and backstory for a character in my story”
“Identity is important to me”
Meant: my sense of self matters deeply
May be taken as: pivot to technical discussion of digital identity verification or zero-trust architecture
Say instead: “My cultural background and personal values are central to who I am”
Tips
- Start with context about people, not systems, if you mean personal identity
- Say 'database ID' or 'unique identifier' if you mean the technical thing
- Mention 'story' or 'character' early when you want creative identity work
- Avoid 'my identity' alone; say 'my personal identity' or 'my digital identity' to steer the model
- If you mean math or code, name the field explicitly: 'identity function in math' or 'identity matrix'
Often confused with
- identifier
- a label or code, not a sense of self
- persona
- a role one plays, not one's core being
- profile
- a collected description, often for others to view
- authentication
- proving who you are, not who you are in essence
- self
- the inner subject, less about social or group membership
- UUID
- a generated number, no human meaning at all
